H registration plate – vintage car appraisal

GTÜ test engineers can carry out a vintage car assessment on your vintage car in line with Section 23 of the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) in order to get an H-registration or a red 07 registration plate.

If the appraisal shows that the prescribed criteria are satisfied, the vehicle can be given an H registration plate.

Which vehicle can receive the H registration plate?

Only vehicles that were first registered at least 30 years ago and that have successfully completed the vintage car inspection can receive this licence plate.

The vintage car appraisal includes

  • an examination within the scope of a general inspection (in accordance with Section 29 StVZO),
  • the expert appraisal of the vehicle’s state of maintenance or preservation,
  • the appraisal of the complete vehicle and
  • the appraisal of the originality of its main assemblies (the relevant main assemblies of a vintage car include the body/bodywork, frame/chassis, engine/drive train, braking system, steering, wheels/tyres, electrical system and the vehicle interior).

Advantages of the H registration plate

The advantage of an H-plate is that it not only gives the driver the right to drive in environmental zones, but also the favourable (flat-rate) vehicle tax, which pays off especially with large engines.

For a vintage car to get an H appraisal from GTÜ, it is important that the vehicle already has German vehicle documents (registration certificate or vehicle title) and does not come straight from abroad.
