Individual modifications and the tuning of vehicles
Tuning – special wheels, spoilers, lowering, or performance upgrades
Our GTÜ inspection engineers or the authorised signatories of the GTÜ Technical Service will help you with all matters regarding the tuning of and modifications to your vehicle. Regardless of whether it’s a matter of vehicle attachments, conversions, modifications or tuning, we document any modifications and file registrations, so long as everything is technically in order.
Modifications include all types of tuning measures or modification approvals in line with Section 19 (3) StVZO (German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations), such as changing the wheel/tyre combination. The installation of a particle filter is also subject to modification approval. In the case of parts that have a General Operating License (Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis – ABE), a copy of this licence must be enclosed, from which you can see whether an installation approval is required and whether there is any obligation to enter it in the vehicle documents.
If a parts certificate exists for the component, the immediate acceptance of the installation must always be carried out.
Proof of acceptance of the modification
Your GTÜ inspection engineers or the authorised signatories of the GTÜ Technical Service would be happy to carry out the modification approval for you. If the inspection is successful, you will receive proof of the modification approval, which you need to have entered in your vehicle documents at the registration office.
If you are involved in a traffic accident with an unauthorised modification, you risk your insurance cover. This could be very expensive for you, so before buying or installing a part or before doing any planned tuning, find out from a GTÜ inspection engineer or authorised signatory in your area whether the modification is permitted or not. This will save you time, money and trouble.
Parts certificate for modification approval not available?
If you can no longer find the right parts certificate or parts approval, don’t worry! The GTÜ’s head office in Stuttgart has access to extensive databases which store nearly all type approvals, parts certificates and general operating permits. If required, GTÜ can also get the necessary certificates for a modification inspection of the customer’s vehicle from the manufacturer. Please note that this does involve additional costs.
